FAQs

What are IACs and how do they benefit DoD?

IACs are formal organizations chartered by DOD to help locate, analyze, and use scientific and technical information. They are centers of expertise within specific technology areas. IACs serve as central points of entry for access to consolidated, joint-focused, expert services in a Defense technology area and/or related scientific and engineering discipline. Because they are available for use by all DoD components, the Department avoids the expense of duplication of a similar capability in each using agency, office and unit. Also, and certainly as importantly, work performed for one customer adds to the available database for all, decreasing the possibility of duplicative efforts.

What technology areas do the IACs cover?

IAC areas of expertise cover the full spectrum of Defense Technology Objectives for the Joint Warfighting Science and Technology Plan and the Defense Technology Area Plan. A sampling of technology areas covered includes but is not limited to: chemical/biological defense, information assurance, human systems, modeling and simulation, advanced materials, and weapon systems. For specific information, please contact the IAC Program Management Office and/or review individual IAC Web sites.

The four tables in the reference section of the DTIC IAC Directory (published June 2000) provide a quick reference to IACs keyed to current Defense Science and Technology Strategy areas. If I'm not certain which IAC to contact, is there some way that I can query multiple IACs at once?

If you are not sure which IAC may best be able to answer your question, or if you have a technical inquiry which is not clearly defined and/or several IACs may be able to respond, a message may be submitted to dodiacs@dtic.mil. The message is sent simultaneously to all IACs.

Can an IAC be tasked by DOD/other Government Agencies to provide support for specific work efforts?

Yes, one of the objectives of the DoD IAC Program is to provide a capability to provide in-depth analysis, data gathering and other support activities to meet specific DoD research, development, acquisition, operational, and training requirements. The resulting efforts are referred to as technical area tasks (Tats). Tats are analytical and technical in nature and are separately-defined/separately-funded work efforts over and above IAC basic activities. A DoD or other Government Agency with a major information support requirement may direct a request, and a statement of the work to be performed, through the appropriate government technical representative to the IAC. Tats vary greatly in complexity, cost and duration, ranging from a few months to multi-year efforts.
